Expedition Arrives at Shadow Fox Station
(1) Captain Margaret Magdelena "Capt Mags" of the Magellan emerges from her quarters. "We will be coming out of warp soon."
Kaori << looks up as Maggie enters the bridge. "Hi, Maggie. We must be close."
"Yes, it is not far now."
Isabella Ingram (Bella)<< has been pouring over biographical notes on Admiral Merc Verne, but looks up. "Into the lion's den?" She grins. "Or maybe that's not what I should worry about. Every time I went to a press conference Verne led on Cyhnon, the coffee was ghastly."
Captain Mags << "Might prepare to depart. Once we are there I will take you by shuttle the rest of the way to Shadow Fox Station."
Kaori<< smiles. "I didn't unpack much, and it's already sitting by the shuttle."
Bella << nods down towards her single bag, which is sitting by the computer terminal she's been using.
Captain Mags << prepares to come out of Warp.
[15:15] Magellan AI Navaids: Stand by.
[15:15] Magellan AI Navaids: Working.
Captain Mags << sends a signal to the station. We will be entering the area soon. In about 15 minutes."
Bella << slips a business-style jacket over her T-shirt - first impressions are important. She logs out of the computer and goes to stand behind Maggie, where she has a decent view of instruments and hopefully a good first glimpse of the infamous Verne's space station.
Capt Kahn << takes the Conn on the Bridge of Shadow Fox station. Requests "All stations report"
Ensign Fenzioc << "GravDime Nav diagnostics complete Captain all checks are in the green"
Cmdr Quinn << The crew radiation levels all test within acceptable range Captain
Cmdr Hannah<< "All systems indicate green Captain. GravDime engine fully charged."
Lt. Jovi << Scans of the sector are all clear no signs of anything unusual. No Serpent ships. and no sign of the Magellan yet Captain.
Lcdr Keester << "Long range scans show activity near planet Bul-Ams not able to identify. Captain should we dispatch a Quazar Scout ship?"
Captain Kahn << "Cdr Keester after the expedition team arrives if the activity is still there, then dispatch a Quazar Scout"
Lcdr Keester << "Yes Captain will continue to monitor the activity"
[15:19] Captain Mags << taps buttons and moves toggles in proper sequence.
Kaori << stands quietly behind Maggie's command chair. To her right, Bella paces a bit restlessly.
Captain Mags << "Coming out of warp now." She disengages it.
Bella << closes her eyes - she always finds the visual transition a bit disturbing.
Captain Mags << announces, "We'll be back to normal space soon."
The shifting colours of warp waver, then vanish in a final mind-twisting burst. They're replaced by normal starscape.
Lt. Joviz<< "Contact on the Sensors Captain. Looks to be the Magellan coming out of warp."
Captain Kahn << "Send out two Dragon slayer fighters to escort them in. Send message to Captain Mags and tell her welcome to the Anigisul System"
Lt. Joviz << "Yes Sir. Message sent, Captain."
Captain Mags << voice crackles over the comm.
[15:39]Captain Mags <<: "We have you on scanners. Making final approach. Shadow Fox Station, Magellan requests permission to dock."
[15:39] Cmdr. Hannah<< "Permission granted, Magellan."
Captain Mags << checks readings, looks at reports, and finally stands. "I have ensured the ship is safe. it is all green across the board. We can depart to the station when you are ready."
"I'm ready now," Kaori says quietly.
Bella << returns to the computer and picks up her bag. "Let's go."
Captain Mags << proceeds down to the hangar deck to finish preparing the shuttle for departure, and a few minutes later Kaori guides Bella down. As Maggie does her cross-checks, Kaori picks up her carry lab, then her travel knapsack, then the knapsack she's prepared for Naeya, and sets them on the shuttle's deck before seating herself.
Bella << sits in the opposite seat, her back to the pilot's compartment, her bag on her lap.
Kaori and Bella both lean over to see what they can through the side port of the shuttle as Maggie maneuvers into docking position.
Narrator: Two Dragon slayer fighters circle the Magellan shuttle and perform a low sensor scan then fly off doing some loops and rolls. Bella takes a quick photo as one of the fighter escorts hovers alongside, then one of the station as Maggie banks to the left and it comes fully into view.
[15:41] Capt Kahn << "This is Captain Kahn of Shadow Fox Station Magellan Shuttle Stand by"
(2) [15:42] Captaion Mags << " Standing by." She eyes the undisciplined show the fighters are putting on. "We do want to observe all safety precautions."
[15:44] Dragon Slayer Fighter Pilot Jeetz << "All scans show clear Captain"
[15:51] Capt Kahn "Magellan Shuttle.. This is Shadow Fox Control."
[15:51] Margaret Magdelena: "Roger Shadow Fox Control."
[15:53] Kwan-Jieun Kahn (kiaseye Resident): Capt Kahn << "Magellan Shuttle this is Shadow Fox Control. You are cleared to dock. Make sure all arriving personnel remain on level 4 until given permission to move around the station"
Shadow Fox's docking facilities prove to be a convenient design - instead of entering through a narrow bay, or linking an umbilical to the smallness of a hatch, the shuttle lands on the "roof" which opens, and is tractored slowly to the station's deck as Bella snaps more pictures. From the shuttle's perspective, the sides of the station rise, enveloping the little craft. Eventually it settles, accompanied by a subtle change in weight as the station's artificial gravity negates the shuttle's weaker field.
Kaori hoists her carrylab onto her back and picks up a pack in each hand before going to the still-closed hatch and looking out at the other craft on the deck. Bella tucks her padd into the side pocket of her bag, and waits behind the acolyte for Maggie to open the hatch.
Maggie flicks more switches. The engine stops. She notes when the pressurization of the bay is about complete, and flicks another switch to gradually equalize pressure between the the bay and the interior of the shuttle before she opens the hatch.
As she waits, Kaori continues looking out, using the time to put on her most inscrutably calm Myeong Gai face.
Finally, Maggie pops the seals on the hatch. The three step out, automatically looking around for whoever is to welcome them.
Cdr Hannah says, "I have the Conn" as Capt Kahn turns the deck over to her. Slowly, Kahn walks to the upper deck.
Kaori has just a moment's warning as a half-familiar trace gathers strength as it comes up the stairs. Warned, she manages to keep her calm face on when the familiar voice, more sober than last time she heard it, says "Welcome to Shadow Fox."
Kaori decides on an approach and steps forward. "Myeong Mai be with you." She bows to Captain Kahn. The ritual has its uses. So does having a pack in each hand. No gesture of surprise is possible. "I am Jo Kaori, of the Myeong Gai Order." She bows again, though it's a less deep than the first, emerging not from Myeong Gai ritual but from Genjese habits of politeness. "Thank you for your welcome."
Capt Kahn holds back a smile; she's not much for formalities.
Isabella Ingram radiates eagerness, and steps forward quickly in Kaori's wake. "Hello. Bella Ingram, Central Planets News. And you're - Aren't you Captain Kahn? The famous fugitive pirate? The one who blasted Mercedes Verne's new ship into shards before it was launched?"
On the surface, Kahn sems to ignore both the Myeong Gai ritual greeting and Bella's animated information hunt as she waits to get the all clear and the report of the other expected guests' arrival in her headset. FInally she says, "A little longer, then you will be able to go to level 3."
Kaori keeps her mind open for any indication that Kahn has a memory of meeting her before despite the heavy drinking she'd been doing that evening. "Of course," she says aloud. She sets the two packs on the deck and waits, hands folded.
Bella fills the time with more words. "Captain, I hope you'll let me interview you while we're here. Our audience will want to know about - well, everything, but how you've ended up on this station will be a highlight."
[16:20] Cleopatra Gama comms* This is Sabre 7 Scout requesting permission to land in Shadow Fox Station Hangar Bay. Over.
[16:21] Cmdr Hannah<< "Wait Sabre 7. We have a shuttle that needs to depart and need to clear the landing area first."
[16:21] Cleopatra Gama: "Affirmative, station. Standing by."
Kaori steps back to the shuttle for a moment as Maggie's preparing to leave. "Maggie - it's been good to travel with you," she says, and withdraws as the hatch closes.
Capt Kahn says, "Follow me. We need to clear the landing bay for an arriving shuttle as well as this one's departure. Stay close to me, though - you have not been given permission to roam the station yet."
As they step onto level 3, Kaori looks around the large open area and finds a reason to smile. "Pineapples? How refreshing." She walks over to their hydroponics tank to keep a look, keeping track of what's happening through Maggie's surface thoughts. She's getting better at seeing and hearing through others' eyes and ears.
Margaret Magdelena (Magdelena Resident): initiates systems check preparing for take off.
[16:23] Margaret Magdelena: "Shadow Fox Station Control. Request clearance for departure."
Cmdr Hannah "Magellan Shuttle you have permission for departure. Safe travels."
[16:25] Margaret Magdelena: "Thank you, Shadow Fox. See you next time."
For a moment Kaori wonders if Kahn will view the distance from her side to the pineapple tank as "staying close", but - these are pineapples! Live! On a relatively bare-bones military station! As she stops in front of them, she decides she's close enough to Kahn, whether or not Kahn agrees. She takes a look at the pineapple's status monitors, confirming their good health with her own visual and tactile examination. At the same time, she continues scanning the station with her empathic and telepathic senses, feeling her way around the human life of the station.
Her questing mind picks up Kahn's trace first. Unsurprisingly, Kahn is thinking to herself <The Myeong Gai never follow directions. They think they are special.> The thought is right at the surface, barely needing telepathy for it to be perceived.
Kaori leaves part of her attention on Kahn, of course - not a trusted companion! - and continues her examination of the pineapple, keeping amusement to herself. The roving part of her attention becomes fixed as another familiar trace enters her range of awareness, but she lets herself smile naturally this time - it's Cleo Gama. There's one person with her, presumably the doctor who will be part of the expedition. She steps to the foot of the long ramp to wait for Gama and the very disciplined mind that accompanies her.
(3) As Magellan's shuttle departs the station, Cleopatra Gama watches it from her own small ship's bridge. Finally her comm crackles.
[16:28] Cmdr Hannah: "This is Shadow Fox Station, Saber 7. You have permission to land."
[16:29] Cleopatra Gama: "Affirmative, Shadow. Fox Station Control. Saber 7 switching to station autopilot for landing, over. "
Stepping out of Saber 7, Dr. Nicotine Ester A'Dab looks around the landing bay at the station.
Cleo Gama climbs down from the shuttle cockpit. "I hope they send a porter to get our luggage from the back of the shuttle. "
A'Dab pauses and looks around, puzzled, then smiles and follows Cleo.
"Ah, I suppose we should go down and meet them, Doctor?" Gama glides towards the ramp
"Yes, shall we?"
Gama and A'Dab descend. A couple of meters above Level 3's deck, Gama says, "Greetings everyone. The Gama 6 delegation have arrived." She bows gracefully.
Kaori smiles. "Captain Gama, what a pleasure. I hope your voyage went as well as ours."
"Our voyage was most uneventful."
Kwan-Jieun Kahn steps forward, face and voice stern. "Remain here until the Admiral arrives. No wandering around."
Kaori bows her head politely. "I will be very happy spending the wait catching up with my team members, and examining the hydroponics."
Bella says, "I'd like to take some photos, and maybe start talking to crew."
Looking over at Bella, Kahn says, "Sure, after the Admiral gives her message. You're not a telepath, are you?"
"Me? No." The reporter smiles politely. "My family's genome doesn't hold much in the way of surprises."
Kaori turns and give a small polite smile to Captain Kahn. "I have some telepathic skill, of course," she says. "But I have not been studying its use very long."
A'Dab looks around from behind her sunglasses and smiles.
Kaori bows. "Myeong Mai be with you. Am I speaking to Dr. A'Dab?"
"Ah, Ala en bhilis magō...I mean, Greetings to you all, and yes I am Dr A'dab"
Gama says, "Oh, please forgive me. I did forget to introduce Doctor A'Dab. "
"I am honoured to meet you, Doctor," Kaori says with another Genjese-style bow. "I regret that we were not able to meet earlier."
A'Dab responds with court bow of her own "The pleasure and honor are all mine."
Isabella holds out a hand to the doctor. "Bella Ingram, Central Planets News. Pleased to meet you."
"Pleased to meet you Ingram, and how does the day find you?" A'Dab replies, taking Bella's hand and smiling widely.
Bella grins. "Curious, and curiouser."
Cmdr Hannah sends message to the Admiral "All guests have arrived and waiting your arrival."
Capt Kahn listens to Hannah's report in her headset, then says, "The admiral should be here soon. We can move to the center area and wait for the message. Follow me."
The group follows Kahn - not far, just to an area of seating in the centre of the common area of the deck. They don't wait long. A whistle signals over the Station comms, indicating an Announcement is about to happen.
[16:50] Cmdr Hannah: "Attention Attention... Admiral on deck...Wait for the Admiral's message."
Admiral Mercedes 'Merc' Verne steps out of her quarters into the common area and halts before the expedition group. "Welcome to the Shadow Fox station, the only station in the CSC with a GravDime jump engine."
Kaori bows, her face retaining calm. "Myeong Gai be with you, Admiral. I bring greetings from the High Priestess." She resists the temptation to push deeply into the Admiral's potentially subversive mind, and also sets aside the puzzling reference to the jump engine.
Verne doesn't respond, but continues. "Shadow Fox Station is also the home of the Dragon Slayers Fighter Squadron, commanded by Captain Kahn, the Dragon Slayer herself."
Merc pauses. This time Kaori has to fight harder to retain that impassive expression, and isn't sure she's completely succeeded. Merc is not only working with Kahn...but Kahn has her own command and personal force, here at the heart of Merc's remaining power?
Merc continues. "Here you will finish your preparations for the expedition to Naeya and receive training and briefings on Naeya. We will be running drills so be prepared to learn the safety requirements needed for when we practice the GravDime jumps. The Safety Procedures are posted throughout the station. If you cannot find them, ask Commander Hanna. Welcome again to Shadow Fox Station. Find your quarters and get familiar with the Station. The drills will begin soon enough."
The whistle sounds again, indicating that the announcement is over.
Admiral Verne continues in a more conversational tone of voice. "We do have a presence on Naeya preparing the way for the Expedition. Captain Sholakh is there now and will be available for this mission. He has been temporary recalled to duty. He is one of our, well many do claim he is the best we have for flying a shuttle or fighter in dangerous and complex navigation areas. This expedition will definitely need his skills." She pauses. Kaori almost calls her on her reference to "Captain" rather than "Regent" Sholakh, but manages to keep silent, and Merc continues. "We will be running drills so be prepared to learn the safety requirements needed for when we practice the GravDime jumps. The safety procedures are available throughout the station. If you cannot find them ask Commander Hanna. Welcome again to Shadow Fox station. Find your quarters and get familiar with the Station. The drills will begin soon enough."
(4) Abruptly, Merc turns and re-enters her quarters. The whistle blows three times, signalling that the admiral has left the deck.
Gama, radiating admiration that Kaori's empathy can't help but detect, says, "She seems a mysterious woman. Very charismatic."
A'Dab says, "The admiral does have a way of talking about her."
Kaori's eyebrow jerks in spite of herself, but she is more interested for the moment in something else. "Regent Sholakh is on Naeya. I look forward to the story behind that." She stresses the "regent," and hides her gladness at knowing someone who actually can be relied on is within comm range - and that it's John.
Cmdr Hannah's voice comes on the comm. "At ease, return to normal work. Ships Alert condition is Yellow."
Kahn says, "Follow me. I will show you the crew quarters. Each will have a bunk"
"Thank you, Captain." Kaori picks up her two packs and follows.
Bella, not-so-accidently, manages to walk into what seems to be the medbay. Her sharp eyes note a couple of oddities and a sign with the word "secret" in its heading. She backs out with a muttered, insincere apology, and goes into the cabin next to it where Kahn's led the others.
Gama's mind radiates satisfaction at how spacious the quarters are, with its bunks that look comfortable and its huge windows peering out into space. Kaori catches her mental verbalization...Much nicer than the windowless cabin on board the ship that brought Gama and A'Dab to the station...
Kahn says, "You may choose your own bunks. If you need help or information, press any open access buttons on level 2, the control center."
Kaori looks at the streamlined black vessel bearing the word "Researcher" holding station outside of the windows, then puts her carrylab and packs down by the cot nearest it. "May we go down to Level 2 when we choose, then, Captain?" she asks.
Dr. A'Dab looks about and smiles as she listens to Kahn.
Isabella retrieves her padd from the side pocket of her bag, then slings the bag onto one of the upper bunks.
Capt Kahn answers Kaori. "You may go to all the levels now except level four because there maybe shuttles or fighters landing or leaving."
Kaori nods. "I would prefer not to die in vacuum," she agrees.
Cleopatra Gama nods politely in agreement.
Kahn adds, "Also make sure you grab your safety helmet as the admiral mentioned. You will need them when the drills begin."
"When might you have time for that interview, Captain Kahn?" Bella asks.
Kahn leaves the dorm without replying.
"Captain Kahn isn't attached to norms of social behaviour." Kaori's voice is matter-of-fact. She glances briefly in the direction of Merc Verne's quarters. "Admiral Verne...is attached to such norms when she wants to be." Kaori's voice is bland. So is her face, to the casual observer.
She catches a small flash of something from Dr. A'Dab, but not for long enough to identify it. She begins to realize that there is nothing casual about A'Dab as an observer.
Kaori says, "Our team may be joined by one or two others, but Dr. A'Dab and Captain Gama and I, three of us, are the expedition's core, along with a Shadow Ranger who will be our guide on Naeya." She pauses. "Shadow Rangers...I have some notes to share that will tell you a bit about them - though not enough. For the next week or two - possibly three - we will have a lot of studying to do. Among other things, a course of neurolinguistic programming will be needed, so that overreliance on translators doesn't prevent us from seeming Naeyan. We also need to study planetary conditions, and at some point, I hope Admiral Verne will tell us why the expedition is needed. I fear that the data I was given before we left Cyhnon is quite incomplete."
Dr. A'Dab asks, "Neurological programing, what does that involve?"
Kaori turns to the doctor. "Nothing too dramatic. It's a method of hypnoteaching of vocabulary and phonology and syntax, augmented by live practice. There is some direct neural stimulation, to strengthen learning pathways that most people lose in childhood. An implant, which will also support you when you start interacting with people on the planet."
"That might not be we required in my case" the Doctor says in an almost flawless imitation of Kaori's voice, down to fine details of tone and accent.
Kaori listens. "Nice," she says. "Most adults cannot catch accent so purely. Your accent seems as Genjese as mine." She pauses, then adds, "Of course, neurolinguistic programming teaches the organizational features of language - grammatical and discourse competences - more effectively than its pragmatic aspects - its practical life functions, and a lot of its sociolinguistics - so it's fortunate that our cover story will make it clear that we've come from away - just not from another set of planets."
Gama, attempting to ease any tension, skillfully changes the subject... "Regarding the planetary expedition. What will be our protocol if we are attacked or if there is loss of life or on our side?"
Kaori shakes her head reluctantly. "So far, I have received no information on this. We can assume that if the danger comes from local people or local planetary conditions, we will need to deal with it. We are not to do anything that makes us seem off-worldly to them. If the danger comes from...other sources...we may be able to break protocol."
"The Order of St Beatrice expect us to be of service as needed " A'Dab says in Cleo's voice.
Cleo Gama raises an eyebrow.... "Stop that Adeb." she says with a smirk. "Can't take you anywhere.." *she smiles at A'Dab.*
Kaori says, "I hope we will know more very shortly. But in the meantime, get to know the parts of the station into which we're allowed, and be tolerant when Captain Kahn and Admiral Verne don't answer questions. Oh, and don't forget to pick up the Helmet and safety procedure information the Admiral mentioned. There was a feeling of strong importance attached to them."
