(1) Lt Jovitz opens the direct comlink to Kahn Kwan-Jieun. << "Capt Kahn, we have two VIP transponders being received. One is identified as Baroness Touson, the other indicates only Admiral Priority - guess no name."
On the ramp, within earshot of Jovitz, Kaori smiles. "Ikki Touson. It will be good to see her."
Capt Kahn << "Lt Jovitz, have Baroness Touson dock first. The admiral's guest requires special handling."
Lt Jovitz switches back to external. "Baroness Touson are you there? Are you receiving my comms?"
Ikki Touson, back in her pilot's seat, enters a holding pattern as she waits for permission to land in the shuttle bay to be granted. She flicks on the comm. "Shadow Fox Station, this is special envoy Touson. Requesting permission to dock."
Lt Jovitz << "Baroness Touson you have priority. Please dock right away."
Kaori goes back to Level 3 and waits at the foot of the ramp up to Level 4, waiting for Ikki's speedster to be tractored inboard.
Ikki's craft comes to rest on the deck of the shuttle bay. The bay doors close; she sits quietly till the atmosphere between bay and shuttle equalize. She debarks, along with Alice Illios whose tiger tail is twitching.
The station comms crackle. Lt Jovitz says, << Clear the landing bay. Prepare for high priority arrival for Admiral Merc.>>
Ikki and Alice start down the ramp just quickly enough to miss being crushed by the pressure door sliding shut over their heads.
On the deck below, Kaori carefully refrains from muttering something along the lines of "whoop de doo." She wonders if Merc's special arrival will actually be seen. Then she grins, seeing who's preceding Ikki down the ramp. "Alice! I didn't realize you've arrived. Doing the pre-check for the Baronness, I suppose?"
"Yes, consider it a covert mission."
Kaori looks further upwards and smiles again. "Baronness! Myeong Mai be with you. How was Cyhnon when you left it?"
Ikki answers, "Cyhnon was still doing well when I left to come here."When she reaches the deck, she walks slowly over to Kaori, " I am told to deliver this special to you." She hands over the canister that is the main reason for her hasty voyage from Cyhnon.
It's difficult, but Kaori manages not to seem too excited as she reaches for the canister. "Baronness, thank you." She tucks it semi-casually beneath her arm.
Baroness Touson nods. " I need to be getting back to Cyhnon. If you will excuse me. May you find Unity in the Chaos” _/|\_
Kaori bows. "May you find Unity in the Chaos, and on your path home. Please give my best respects to the Empress. And if you stop at the sushiya, let Ennios know I haven't forgotten his sushi is Cyhnon's best."
There's a small rumble above as the hangar door closes over the Admiral's guest.
"If you wait for just a moment, you may meet someone else interesting," Kaori murmurs to Ikki.
Above their heads, Cmdr Aria Merci's state-of-the-art fighter craft is tractored into position next to Ikki's speedster. Quickly, helmet in place, Merci exits her fighter without waiting for the hangar's atmosphere to be replaced, and waits for the Admiral's teleport
Kaori snorts as the interesting new trace vanishes. She tracks it to Researcher - but as it's essentially unfamiliar, that's the best she can do. "Or maybe you won't," she chuckles quietly. "I wonder if the Admiral's guest is avoiding you, or me?"
The all-clear's given, and Ikki heads back up to her shuttle, slipping on her flight helmet as she goes. Alice remains with Kaori while Ikki refuels and does her safety checks.
[15:31] Ikki Touson: <<Shadow Fox control. Special Envoy is ready to depart.>>
[15:32] Lt Jovitz <<Baroness Touson you are cleared to depart.>>
On Level 1, Captain Kahn stands slowly, thinking she needs a caffeine-infused drink. Quickly she goes up to level 3.
Kaori wants to find a quiet corner in which to open her package in a tearing hurry, but maintains her casual air as Kahn emerges from the ramp. "I regret that Baronness Touson didn't stay long enough to greet you, Captain Kahn," she says.
Ester A'Dab emerges from the medbay where she's been discussing skintone-altering options with the medical staff. Seeing Kaori, she says, "Well, don't look at me like you about to test your sanity by going beyond the bounds of reality. But we may be faced with having to use nanites for the complexion challenge."
Kaori bows to the doctor. "I'm afraid you just missed Baroness Touson," she says as the two start walking together towards coffee. "And the Admiral seems to have a visitor, who has skipped the process of meeting all of us. And you are essential to the mission - so if there are not other good solutions, we'll have to risk nanites, though I'd rather not. Makeup is too temporary to be trusted, and I take it that more permanent skin dyes aren't workable."
Kaori sits down next to Kahn, who's naturally left a seat between herself and the party. "Captain, Doctor, let me present Alice Illios, senior member of the Imperial Guardian service. Alice, this is Dr. A'Dab, who's travelling with me - and you may remember Captain Kahn from that shooting match you rescued Gama's salvage boat from." She grins and stretches a hand out to Alice, inviting her to take one of the remaining chairs.
A'Dab slides into another. "Hmm... I suspect my height and facial features might be a bigger issue than the skin tone."
"There are some tall people," Kaori says. "Apparently Regent Sholakh has been active on the surface, with no-one commenting on his size except perhaps in admiration..."
Captain Kahn: makes a hmmm then looks over at Kaori
Kaori begins pouring coffee for the table as Gama claims another of the chairs.
Ester accepts her cup. "Oh, do we know anything about the local beliefs?"
"A bit," Kaori says. "John and the Shadow Ranger, Balam Nolae, who will also travel with us, will know more. Balam Nolae has been stationed on Naeya for some time. Local beliefs are actually one of the things we'll be investigating most deeply- trying to understand where this new cult of peace has come from, while doing our best not to breach the ancient quarantine agreement. We'll travel on a locally-built sailboat, and land at a village at the foot of the trail to our destination. Just pilgrims..." She hands the coffee around as she speaks.
Ester A'Dab takes an offered mug. "I suppose speaking as a medical professional myself, how do we know we will be bringing diseas to the locals?"
"I understand that's been tested out," Kaori says. "We'll go through decontamination here, and on the island. On the island we will also get additional shots that will kill selected pathogens in our system."
Captain Kahn: makes another little hmmm and clicks her cup on the table "I like to remind everyone that as soon as the fuel is finished being mined from the nearby planet, we will be jumping to planet Naeya, So be prepared for another GravDime jump."
Kaori looks back at Kahn. "How soon will refueling be finished?"
"Anywhere from a day to maybe 5 days to finish the fuel collection."
Kaori leans back. "Captain, we're still waiting for that promised briefing by Admiral Verne. If we're only here for another day, we need to see her quickly."
Ester whispers, "Well, time is the fire we burn in, then."
(2) Kaori telepaths back, <<time is defined differently by some than others - and paranoia about security often backfires on itself." Her face remains smooth. She doesn't know if A'Dab will be able to catch the telepathic comment, but suspects A'Dab will be able to read it in her face.
The Sister of St. Beatrice looks at the Myeong Gai acolyte, arches an eyebrow and looks back to the table "Well, I imagine the outsiders on pligrimage will cover most of this. But shall we not get to this briefing then?"
Kaori looks at Kahn. "I would be grateful if you could transmit to the Admiral that we are eagerly awaiting her insights, as quickly as possible now that we are so close to departure."
Captain Kahn: looks over at Kaori and does her best to look straight into her eyes, intentionally opening her mind to her to read.
Kaori looks back at Kahn and nods, waiting for the message. Before anything specific forms, Alice Illios asks, "What means of signalling an emergency will you have if you become compromised?"
Kahn says aloud, "Maybe I can explain something that may help."
Kaori replies, "Any explanations you can provide in the Admiral's absence will be appreciated, Captain."
Kahn folds her hands on the table. "The current mysteries we have are the Night Serpent ships and to find out if some outside force is affecting the Naeya society and Culture. The spreading of a message much like Chaos Unity's is part of the mystery. It seems to have spread very quickly for such a spread out and sparse population. That is the main mystery to resolve by the expedition. Find one called the Unity Monk and determine what is going on"
Ester looks over sunglasses and glances between Jo and Kahn. "What is Chaos Unity?"
Kaori smiles faintly, a little surprised that A'Dab hasn't asked this question before. "Chaos Unity is the spiritual path that was one of the main generators of the settlement of Cyhnon. It posits that sentient life in the universe is inherently chaotic - and that the chaos must be accepted for what it is, so that sentients can live harmoniously together. Unity cannot be achieved unless Chaos is first accepted."
"And what is the traditional belief of the Naeyans?"
Kaori sighs. "We don't yet know what Naeyans believe, or at least what they believed before the peace epidemic started. They were founded by anti-technology pacifists, who would have had access to Myeong Mai's teachings, but those teachings were mostly abandoned, as far as we know, during centuries of competition for resources. Then, some time after Hae Ri's visit fifty cycles ago, something changed. Wars stopped. We don't know just when, and we don't know why. This is part of what we are to find out."
"Interesting"
Kaori leans forward. "The other thing I know we are to investigate...is a suspicion, as noted in the material I shared with you two weeks ago, is the possibility that the change may be connected to unsanctioned manufacture of advanced Nari synths. This is why we cannot risk electronic communication." She looks again at Kahn. "Captain, is there anything you can add?"
"I don't have anything else to add but that it is important you use the two Guides you will meet on the planet. That is very important." Kahn stands and walks away, coffee cup in hand.
"Speaking of these synths, how are they detected?" the doctor asks.
Kaori hefts the cylinder that Ikki's left with her. "That answer should be in here. Telepathically, I can identify them as synths, but only if they're in line of sight. The NARI detection equipment that should be in here will record electronic traces, though, which don't have my limitation. We'll download every time we're back in the village, or on the island." She looks at A'Dab. "Doctor, I expect your own skills will also allow you to identify them, if they are close enough for you to read their faces and postures."
"So they would fail a Turing Test then?"
Kaori shakes her head. "The most advanced NARI models are self-aware enough to pass a Turing Test."
"Did Cyhnon intelligence ever discover who was behind the secret NARI plant?" A'Dab asks.
"Now that I don't know. There are more gaps in what I've been told than there is information." Kaori opens the container and removes the crystals it contains, examining each in turn. The last item she removes from its bracket is a data crystal; she palms that eagerly.
"Well, perhaps that is the clue that's needed to what's going on," A'Dab says.
"I think it's key information," Kaori agrees. "And I think the roots track back to old Shylzan - or would track back, if more people were sharing more of what they know."
"So what you are saying is that Old Shylzan is a toxic wasteland? As in, something only a machine could live in?"
Kaori starts packing the NARI detection crystals back into the container. "At last report. The critical mass of old Shylzan, at least." She pauses to look at A'Dab and smiles. "I like your questions."
Alice Illios stands. "I'd better find a place to flop. I'll be around. Take care, both of you." She bows respectfully.
"Hand of the Maker go with you, Alice," A'Dab responds. Alice vanishes down the ramp, tail flicking lightly.
Kaori finishes repacking the NARI detection crystals and seals the container's top - not only with her thumbprint, but with the telepathy-activated Myeong Gai secure lock, then looks at A'Dab again. "Officially, the self-aware version of NARI have only existed for a couple of decades," she says. "But what's official and what's actual...often diverge."
A'Dab shifts into philosophic mode. "Humanity been debating what is sentience since the Gold Age of technology of Earth over 30,000 years ago, and the question still is unanswered."
Kaori grins. "Probably longer."
"But more to the point, the reason a thinking machine ends up a mockery of a human mind is that those who create the thinking machines want slaves, not other free thinking minds."
"That certainly seems to be how the NARI began," Kaori says softly. "They were given sentience at the start, but no self-awareness. Then they were sent to shape planets that would support Shylzani-human life. Their whole purpose was to serve - to be slaves, their intelligence notwithstanding."
"Oh, was this one of the worlds the used the NARI to terraform?"
Kaori shrugs. "The settlers were anti-tech," she says, "but somehow they let themselves compromise during initial settlement. No matter how Shylzan-like the planet was at the start, I don't think they could have survived without some agriculture-focused terraforming - and on the other worlds the Shylzani settled, the work of terraforming was done mostly by NARI." She stands and stretches. "But I need to start figuring out how to use the NARI scanner, and see what additional information the Palace has been able to provide. I'll see you at eveningmeal." She raises a meaningful eyebrow, and heads to her bunk.
The data crystal contains the planetary survey! Engrossed in its details, she misses the eveningmeal bell.
"Clear all channels. The Fire Jackets Carrier Group is en route," Kahn is saying as Commander Aria Merci teleports directly onto the operations deck of Shadow Fox Station. Merci walks directly over to Kahn, ignoring all others around her.
Kaori, who's been spending her morning checking current solar data and coordinating it with the planetary survey information, allows herself a small amused smile. Apparently the Commander has been honing her approach to communication in imitation of Verne. Come to think of it, there's a passing resemblance to Verne physically, too...Curious, Kaori prods gently at the Commander's mind - but backs off hastily. The Commander seems to be protected by much the same kind of shielding as that used by Crisha Ra... Her face reflecting no, she bows politely and says, "Myeong Mai be with you, Commander Merci."
Isabella Ingram comes down the ramp with a blithe air. She's been listening from the top and naturally has questions. "Good morning!" She looks curiously at the tall, pale, blonde young woman. "Isabella Ingram, Central Planets News," she says, offering her hand. "Here with the approval of the Empress." She watches for a reaction, knowing that anyone in Verne's command has only a loose affiliation to Yun-Hee - if any. "Now what are the Fire Jackets Carrier Group?"
Captain Kahn: "That is highly classified. I suggest all non navy leave the CCC."
Cmdr Aria Merci: turns for a moment gives a very unimpressed look at Bella and Kaori, then motions to the journalist to back off. "Should I call security?"
Kaori has managed to maintain her calm face despite the shock of Merci's shielding and its implications. "As you are the Admiral's aide, Commander, before I leave this deck, I must ask when the Admiral will be providing the briefing I was promised on her particular reasons for and perspective on the Naeya expedition, which I am to lead. I have a specific reason to be privy to anything that may affect the Expedition, in other words." She bows slightly.
Cmdr Merci picks up the comms unit. "Security to Command Center."
Doctor Ester A'Dab strolls down the ramp in Bella's wake, a cup of coffee in her hand.
Bella hears A'Dab on the ramp and turns with a grin. "Doctor! I think this functionary is trying to get us kicked out. Good of her to add interest to our day."
Kaori stands quietly, hands folded, calm, as she gives a slightly deeper bow to A'Dab than she's given to the Commander. "Myeong Mai be with you." Kaori's sure that the others in view haven't perceive her startlement at Merci's anti-telepath protection, but A'Dab, she has no doubt, will have caught some hint that something's off.
Ester blinks and responds to Bella. "Pardon, someone is doing what?"
Kaori says, "Let me introduce Admiral Verne's aide - Cmdr Aria Merci - Commander, this is Dr. Ester A'Dab of the Order of St. Beatrice and counsellor to the Gama IV refugee community.."
Ester A'Dab smiles with far toomany teeth and bows. "Pleased to meet you, Commander Merci."
Two security droids and one Shylzani Officer arrive in CCC from the deck below. "What is the emergency, Cmdr Merci?"
Merci turns and waves her right hand in the direction of Kaori, Bella and Dr A'Dab. "Security, escort these unwanted bugs out of the CCC."
Kaori stays in place. "Captain Kahn - I believe this is your decision, being higher in rank than the Commander, and being in command of this station, in the Admiral's continued absence."
Kahn replies slowly. "Cmdr Merci is the Aide to the Admiral so I think it is who you know here for now." Her voice isn't so calm; she appears somewhat shaken with the change of situation on the Shadow Fox, and her empathic trace confirms it.
(3) Bella Ingram sneaks a photo and makes a couple of notes, envisioning the story.
A very obvious grin is briefly seen on Commander Merci's face. "You are so correct, Captain Kahn."
Kaori peeks under the corner of Kahn's thoughts. She comes away with the impression that perhaps the odd alliance between Kahn and Merc is not so secure as Kahn's previously made it seem - though Kahn's mind is racing through possibilities for turning the new circumstances somehow in her own favour.
She gives that slight bow to Merci again. "Then I will be pleased to comply with your request, Commander. Ms. Ingram, Doctor, I find myself in need of coffee. Would you join me?" The security detail, she's implied, is not a consideration.
Ester stands at her ease; as a Trantorian, she is well experienced in bureaucratic stand offs. "Of course, Ms. Jo."
Bella chuckles. "I'm looking forward to interviewing you later, Commander. And since the coffee here is a lot better than what your Admiral used to serve reporters back on Cyhnon - yes, coffee sounds good, Kaori!" She turns and starts up the ramp.
Kaori bows again. "May you find unity in the chaos, Commander. Captain Kahn, I look forward to speaking with you later." She gives the same small bow to the security detail on the way past, and the same "May you find unity in the chaos, friends."
At the top of the ramp, Kaori allows herself a chuckle. "I suppose I do need coffee!" She leads the way to the table with the cappuchino maker.
Ester sits and and refills her cup. "Seems the Commander has a lot to get off her chest."
Bella Ingram leans back and crosses her legs. "Hmm...Merci, Aria, Commander..." She flips through the naval records she's brought up on her padd.
"The Commander...yes." Kaori's piecing data together - it's a bit of a shock, given the rapid development of her telepathy, to be back to relying wholly on her observational and intellectual perceptions of people. "I believe she's new to her position."
"Ah, well, I see. So, what does this mean for this mission then?"
Kaori allows herself a small frown. "There is more than Merci merely being new in her position. She has - technology and technique - that should not be available to her." She leans forward to pour her coffee and Isabella's.
"Technology?"
Kaori breathes out slowly. "Technology. Bella, you may want to investigate possible connections between Commander Merci and Crisha Ra. I'm sure there's an interesting story there - although you may find that Admiral Kim, or the Empress, don't want it published."
"Ah, there is the Commander now," Ester says, looking at the top of the ramp from which Merci's emerging.
Cmdr Aria Merci looks over at the group seated around the table, then walks over, seeming very relaxed.
Bella swipes her screen to a page of unrelated notes.. "Hello, Commander," she says with a friendly smile.
"May I pour you some coffee, Commander?" Kaori asks. "The machine does cappuccino as well as americano."
Merci smiles just briefly as she pours a cup of coffee for herself, then turns around as if she did not notice them at all although as she walks slowly away she's obviously listening - behavior on her part that will be noticed often.
Kaori sips some of her own coffee. "Lessons from the Admiral," she murmurs - quietly, but calculated so that Merci should hear.
Cmdr Aria Merci softly laughs, ending a bit shrilly; Kaori's comment has been duly noted.
Kaori refrains from the small smile that threatens to tug at her lips.
Ester watches the commander's south end as she walks away. "Well, she seemed to be happy enough."
Kaori says, "I don't know if happy is the word. Satisfied, perhaps?"
Ester's still watching her walk. "She reminds me a bit of my friend the Kepitan."
Bella looks up. "How so?"
"She's blonde for one thing,"
Kaori lets the small smile out. "So is Admiral Verne."
"Hmm the words for this...auqslā? How does that translate. Hmm...a tree in a storm, no - that doesn't work - a lack of peace, under much stress."
Merci walks over to the hydroponic tank on the far side of the common area and picks a few samples of the plants. slowly chewing on them and sipping her coffee.
Kaori glances at Merci. "Fiddlehead ferns," she calls softly. "An excellent source of key micronutrients, and the staff here is doing an excellent job with them."
Bella brings back the navy screen. "Naval records aren't very helpful. Nothing accessible on her before the last 4 cycles. There are a lot more bytes in the file but it says "on special assignment. Classified. Must have clearance Alpha Foxtrot Gama to review the records. See Admiral Mercedes Verne for clearance."
"Points of resemblance to the Admiral," Kaori says thoughtfully. "And Verne is also the person who controls access to her records. And...Admiral Kim should be the person with the power to control that. I wonder why Verne still has that authority in the system?"
Bella can't uncover the closed early cycles of Merci's career and life, but she can open more than she's supposed to be able to. "Some performance evaluation material - renowned for her memory, apparently - eidetic, remembers absolutely everything? It's credited with contributing to her success in some of those unavailable assignments." She scrolls further and stops. "Oh - what was that carrier group Kahn was talking about?"
Kaori scrolls back in memory. "Flaming - no, that's not right - Fire Jackets. 'Fire Jacket Carrier Group is en route' is what she said."
"Are they planning to invade this planet?" Ester asks drolly.
"The carrier group is mentioned here," Bella says, and clicks to bring up its specs. "Hm. Verne was its last commander prior to Unification. 30 or more ships, two carriers, four heavy cruisers, ten destroyers, support ships."
Commander Merci is trying to access systems information from a terminal but keeps getting an error message. She taps on the button a few times to see if the error will clear, then speaks quietly into her personal comm.
Kaori turns to Bella. "I would appreciate it if I could piggyback a message for the High Priestess on your next transmission."
The hatch to one of the side cabins opens, and Fox Station Tech McBribe walks into the commons. "Commander, you call?"
The Commander's voice shows frustration. "Yes, this unit is not giving me the read out I requested. It only blinks and makes this horrible buzz sound. I tried clearing it but nothing works."
"With your permission I'll have a look at it Commander."
4) "Yes get to it," Merci snaps. "I don't have the patience for things like this."
"Yes Commander." The young man logs in and starts exploring paths. After a moment, he bends down and opens the service plate and starts to work - while also listening in on the conversation over at the table. He doesn't usually work on this level and he bunks on Level 1, so this is really the first time he's had a chance to notice all the civilians.
Merci says, "This is an old unit, mainly an emergency backup but it has a hidden function I need to access."
Kaori finds her attention drifting to the other side of the level...she doesn't dare try to listen through Merci's ears, but the tech's work very well for her.
The tech says, "Ah, here's your problem, ma'am. a burnt out data transfer stabilizer. I can replace it right away."
Cmdr Merci smiles. "Good job McBribe."
"All done." McBribe stands up and brushes off his trousers.
Merci looks him over for a minute. "Good job. I will make sure to let your supervisor know that you did a very good job."
"Thank you Commander. Is there anything else that you need worked on Ma'am?"
Kaori catches the technician's professional relief. Merci seems to have some of the social skills necessary for a commander, at least.
"I am good for now," Merci says. "I will be sure to request you next time. That is all for now, Technician."
McBribe comes to attention and salutes. "May I check the other systems on this level Commander?"
Merci snaps her heels quietly and salutes back. She almost lets out a giggle but holds it in.
McBribe holds his salute until the Commander's is finished, then settles into an 'At Ease' pose.
"You may check all the systems," the Commander says. "We need to be in top form if we are going to jump to Naeya in a few days."
Kaori can catch bits of Merci's emotions without triggering her anti-telepathy shield. The suppressed giggle shouts in her head. Somehow it makes her feel better about the Admiral's protege.
"Yes Ma'am!" McBribe salutes again and cheerfully goes of to look carefully over the hydroponics tank nearest the civilian-occupied table.
Kaori watches the young technician examining the controls that keep the fiddlehead ferns healthy. "Moisture seems a little low in some leaves on the right-hand side of the tank," she calls softly to him.
"Yes Ma'am. I'll take care of it," McBribe responds, going to the spot she's suggested.
"Otherwise, they're in excellent health - I've been impressed."
McBribe beams. "Thank you ma'am!"
Kaori smiles. "It's a difficult task, in this environment."
McBribe nods and tries to look serious and friendly at the same time, not at all sure he's pulling off this difficult etiquette maneuver.
Kaori smiles gently. "You are doing well. It's a small piece of that large process of creating unity out of chaos."
"Thank you ma'am" he says and blushes a little - it seems she can read his very thoughts...
Kaori realizes that she's sounding like a priestess already, and groans internally.
Bella's fallen into off-topic conversation with Ester A'Dab, and it's interesting enough that she's opened another page for notes..."margrave...Schendar marches. Yes, one of my colleagues has been sending back pretty vivid stories from there."
She glances at A'Dab. "I suppose you are in regular contact with the Margrave, Doctor?"
"Hmm, we follow the Proper Forms on these things."
"Proper forms in this case being...?"
"Well, the Margrave makes his wishes know to his staff, who in turn contact the Provence staff who in turn contact the Reverend Mother Superior for the March who in turn communicates her wishes to my superiors. Of course the Mek Hraman Lsir Struk, hmm, that would be the Imperial Scout Service has their input. And then there is a records search,"
"Cumbersome channels. I suppose that's inevitable in any complex hierarchical culture," Bella comments.
"Considering the size of the Imperium it's quite quick."
"The influence of your Reverend Mother and order, I suppose?" Bella asks with a smile.
Very much in the Proper Forms, Ester says, "We merely offer useful advice to those who wield power."
Bella looks just a bit sceptical, but notes down the diplomat-doctor's situational description. It's telling.
